You’re in store for a treat at Kloof and Highway SPCA market

The Kloof and Highway SPCA market is fantastic, but first – we won.

CAXTON Local Media Durban, and in particular, our Berea Mail title, is still celebrating the win at the recent AVBOB Forum of Community Journalists Excellence Awards.

My colleague, Danica, and I headed up to Johannesburg to be part of the awards ceremony aimed at encouraging excellence and rewarding meritorious work in local and community print media.

Berea Mail won the Best Front Page Corporate-Owned Free category and Danica Hansen came second in the Digital Reporting category.

One of my favourite ‘My Places to Be’ these past two months, besides where we won the awards, was the Kloof and Highway SPCA market, where I took an impromptu visit recently.

It’s a treat, and if you haven’t done it, make a date. You enter the venue on a tiny dirt road, which for the most part, only allows one car at a time. Depending on where you park, as you get out of your car in a field, you will see a group of donkeys who love the attention of visitors.

I spotted them but decided to browse before paying the donkeys any attention – they were already being doted on by other visitors.

Belinda Dolphin, the singer whose melodic voice permeates the market, is one of my favourite features at the market. Her playlists are not only varied but suit the vibe of this lovely venue.

There is a peacock that roams amidst dogs on leashes, cats sitting on piles of books, and children having fun. Everybody appears happy to be there, and the cherry on top: top-quality, pre-loved items sold at giveaway prices.

What’s more, money raised from the sales at the market goes towards the non-profit’s fight against preventing cruelty to all animals.

With the asses being my favourite, the singer my second favourite, browsing the nursery is my third favourite thing to do at the Kloof and Highway SPCA. I walked off with two succulent plants for only R45.

And while these are my favourites, there is also The Village Green, the Hidden Treasures Marquee, and the Book Shop.

The Kloof and Highway SPCA open for their market every Tuesday and Saturday from 08:00 to 15:00.
