Discover the world of sea rescue at national Open Day

Members of the public will have a chance to visit any one of the NSRI’s 50 bases nationwide to find out more about the organisation’s work.

THE Durban community can experience a taste of the important work of the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) on Saturday, October 1 at the NSRI Open Day, held at NSRI bases across the country.

The Open Day offers the community a chance to learn more about the NSRI, which is manned by more than 1 300 unpaid volunteers who are on call 24/7, ready to respond to water-related emergencies.

“Some would say that our volunteers are heroes, but to us, the real heroes are all of you, the donors who support us every day. So, please, come down with the family to your local rescue base – our volunteers would love the chance to meet their heroes in person,” said NSRI CEO Dr Cleeve Robertson.

The NSRI website tells the story of the organisation’s origins – established after Simonstown teacher Patti Price started a letter-writing campaign following an offshore tragedy in 1966.

Price called for a sea rescue service to be set up after four fishing vessels went out to sea in Stilbaai and only one returned. Price is recognised as the founder of the NSRI.

Today, there are 50 NSRI bases nationwide. Members of the public can visit a base near them on Saturday’s Open Day. There is a base just off Mahatma Gandhi Road in Durban’s Point area. Visit the NSRI website to find a base near you.
