Rotary Anns prepare for Open Gardens

The Kloof Anns Rotary is inviting the public to view four beautiful gardens during their annual Open Gardens set to take place on October 1 and 2.

THE Kloof Rotary Anns Club is set to celebrate their 30th year of their annual Open Gardens. The much-anticipated event will see the public come to view the four gardens located in different parts of the Highway area. Convener Andrea Ras said she is excited for this year’s gardens as they will be their first since the relaxation of the Covid-19 regulations.

“This year, we have enough time to plan, and the gardens are beautiful and will be ready for viewing on the 1st and 2nd of October,” she said.

This year’s viewing price is R30 per person per garden. “Proceeds are donated to local charities such as Philakade, Vema and Fulton School as well as other charities and feeding schemes,” she said.

The Highway Mail had the opportunity to view one of the four gardens that will be on show. The garden on 3 Inkala Road in Kloof is one colourful and spacious garden, beautifully lawned with pathways leading to different sections of the garden. The garden also includes two beautifully sculptured water fountains.

Garden owner Philippa Welgemoed said the garden came about when she thought she could use the space in her yard for a purpose. “We called in a landscaper to help us design the garden. From there, we started buying the things we required to maintain the garden. I have some of my staff members who help me maintain the garden. I also do some work, and that helps me escape reality,” she said.

Ras gave the location of the other three gardens and a description of each:

16 Alexander Ave, off Abrey Road
The owners have a passion for their garden, which has generous lawns highlighted by several ‘rooms’ that show off stunning pots, water features and different planting arrangements.

1 Jacaranda Hill, 7 Meadow Lane off Meadow Road
This garden is a beautiful combination of colourful exotics and indigenous plants. The owner is attempting to recreate the grasslands that once adorned Kloof. Pretty pathways and quaint nooks will keep your interest piqued.

Jacob House Garden in Waterfall College, 111 Ngwela Road, from Blessing Ninela
This is an indigenous garden that overlooks the rolling Valley of 1000 Hills. The organisation’s landscaping philosophy seeks to cultivate a sense of biodiversity. It is truly a feast for the senses of any nature lover.

The gardens will be available for viewing on October 1 and 2, and entry is R30 per person per garden, payable by cash or Zapper. Children under 12 are free. Gardens will be open from 09.30 till 16.30 on both days.
