WATCH: Win for the Highway Majorette Club

The Highway Majorette Club is set to represent the province in the National Majorette and Cheerleading Finals in Limpopo.

IT is a winning season for the Highway Majorette Club as they are set to compete in the National Majorette and Cheerleading Finals in Limpopo in October. The club, which is made up of three teams, will be heading to Polokwane in two weeks to represent the province in the South African championship competition.

This was after the girls competed against the top KwaZulu-Natal high schools at the Regional Majorette and Cheerleading Finals. The club took second place for the following: Small Pom/Non-Prop, Group Small Mace and Group Leader (Small Drill). They also came third for the following: Small Flag Group, Large Flag Group, Small Baton Group and Squad (Small Drill).

Speaking to the Highway Mail, coach Elmarie Samuel said the results were pleasing as they have just revived the team since the Covid-19 regulations have been relaxed. “The girls are divided into three teams, the juniors, seniors and tertiary. We revived our team early this year with the new tertiary group being added. We do not have any age restrictions; our youngest is six years old, and the oldest is 55. The Junior Team is made up of primary school children, the Senior Team is high school learners, and Tertiary is beyond schoolgoing age,” she said.

Furthermore, Samuel said some of the girls were joining the majorette for the first time, and they are doing exceptionally well. “We train them from scratch. We have practices three times a week, and that’s when we set their moves. The sport is about everyone doing the same thing at the same time, to music. It is similar to dancing, but dancing with props,” she said.

Samuel said what sets them apart from other teams is that they are not affiliated with other schools like the rest of the teams. “We have got kids who are homeschooled, kids from Hillcrest, from Waterfall and from all over the Highway area. The tertiary team we have just added has made our team age limitless.

She said the season was a success, and they are very excited, and that is evident in all three teams. “The sport requires a lot of work, and the ladies have outdone themselves,” she said.

The team is preparing for their finals in the competition that kicks off on October 3, 2022.
