Pregnant dog rescued

A stray dog is safe and sound at the Kloof and Highway SPCA after it was saved in the Mariannridge area.

A pregnant stray dog was saved by the Kloof and Highway SPCA in the Mariannridge area after the community raised concerns. The SPCA reported that one of their inspectors, Israel Silevu, had been alerted to the stray dog as it did not belong to anyone and was pregnant.

“Inspector Silevu left a trap in the area and monitored the trap daily. On Wednesday morning, a relieved Inspector Silevu found the female dog in the trap. He immediately transported her to the safety of the Kloof and Highway SPCA where our experienced staff established that she had already had her puppies.

“Two members of staff were sent back to the area to search for her puppies, and it was an incredibly happy outcome when all 10 of her babies were found huddled in a hole where she had presumably kept them out of harm’s way,” said Barbara Patrick, the SPCA manager.

The mom and her puppies are safe and sound at the SPCA. “We are truly grateful to the people who reported her plight, however, she is an example of why sterilisation is so vital. Ten unwanted puppies have been born, and that is another 10 too many to add to the thousands,” said Patrick.

The SPCA encouraged the public to support their Outreach Clinic starting on October 3, where they will be helping the Dassenhoek communities by making a donation towards their sterilisation clinic.
