Meet your local bed specialist

As one of KwaZulu-Natal’s oldest family-owned bed specialists, providing top-quality mattresses and bases for private homes, B&Bs, hotels and decorators, Hugh Mathie Beds has been associated with comfortable beds at sensible prices for over 50 years.

Hugh is known to hand-pick quality mattresses from top manufactures with proven service records. He firmly believes in excellent personal service and will find the right bed to suit each person’s sleeping habits and weight, with special consideration for back pain and snoring problems.

“Our service sets the standard for the bed industry.” Hugh will deliver anywhere in South Africa and, in his own words, he will provide “comfortable beds for everybody”. He also offers a wide range of padded headboards in the latest designer colours.

Hugh Mathie Beds is situated in Kloof. Delivery is free in the greater Durban area. “We endeavour to deliver to you wherever you are. Ask us about delivery to your area,” says Hugh.

TOP TIP: Research has shown that one of the leading causes of neck and back pain is poor sleeping posture. The correct pillow will ensure that your head and spine are aligned, helping to prevent back and shoulder aches. Ask Hugh about the best pillow for you.

Hugh’s tips for buying a new bed
Select the correct bed for your weight group.
Testing for your new bed – lie down, try it on your side, on your back and on your tummy.  Don’t prod the bed with your fist – prodders usually choose the wrong bed.
Don’t be pushed – salespeople may just be after commission.
Don’t buy only on price – this could be a bad mistake. Rather save up and buy correctly.
Turn or rotate your mattress monthly – this allows the comfort layers to fully recuperate without weight resistance.
We support local factories – insist on our specifications. Only Mathie Approved Beds are on display in our stores. Factories in other provinces can make after-sales service a nightmare.
When moving your bed to clean – always pick the base up, don’t just drag it or the legs will break.
A mattress protector is advised – other than protecting your mattress it can prevent a warranty claim from being refused because of a mark on the mattress, eg; a coffee stain.
Give your body a chance to adjust to the feel of a new mattress. It takes roughly 10 nights.
Wooden beds – checking that the bolts or screws are tight on a bi-monthly bases. This just prolongs the life of the bed / bunk.
King size beds always come with two bases – reason; one complete king base would not be able to be maneuvered through most houses.
The ideal sleeping position is with a pillow filling the gap between the bed and your neck –  If your pillow is too high or too low it can revert to lower back pain, shoulder and neck tension.
Under normal circumstances it is not true that the firmer the bed the better the support. If a reputable core or support system is used in the mattress the comfort layer can be as soft as you like.
Online points are guidelines – there may be a difference between online and in store, eg; colour in a picture may differ in real life. Your idea of firm and the classification may differ, so the ideal is for you to come into the shop. Remember, feelings are subjective.
All our spring systems are of the utmost quality proven designs. No cheaper imported springs are used in our bed specification.

Don’t let anyone fool you by saying they can get the same bed! Similar is not the same.
Brands which do not have local backup will not be recommended in our stores.
After 45 years in the business, our bed quality is tried and tested.

The Kloof shop is open seven days a week and three-month lay-bys are welcome.
