KZN premier announces close monitoring of Pinetown District for upcoming exams

Extra precautionary measures have been put in place for the upcoming matric exams in centres in the Pinetown District.

THE Pinetown district has been identified as one of the high-risk matric examination centre districts that the Department of Education is monitoring closely. This was announced by KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thami Ntuli in a joint media briefing with KZN MEC of Education Sipho Hlomuka to state the province’s readiness for the National Senior Certificate (NSC)  Examination.

Set to commence on October 21, Ntuli said the province has no hesitation that the province is combat-ready to administer the examinations.

“The department is conducting close monitoring of 12 districts that the province has identified as high-risk examination centres with Pinetown District being one of them. The other 11 centres are: Harry Gwala, Umkhanyakude, uThukela, Umzinyathi, Umlazi, Zululand, King Cetshwayo Ugu, Ilember and Umgungundlovu,” he said.

Hlomuka said these measures are based on previous occurrences in these districts.

“People tend to use important events such as matric exams as an opportunity to protest with the aim of causing a disturbance. We have put in necessary measures to minimise such events,” he said.
