Local ballroom dancer wins international title

Young local dancer recalls falling in love with the Strictly Come Dancing show, and years later, the dancer celebrates one of his titles in Ballroom dancing.

UPPER Highway teenager Matthew Belling, a talented Latin and ballroom dancer, is thrilled with his progress in the dance world. The 16-year-old has just returned from Rumba in the Jungle, an International Dance Festival, where he was crowned the 2024 Rumba in the Jungle Youth Solo Latin Champion.

This achievement adds to his impressive titles: 2023 Rumba in the Jungle Junior Solo Latin Champion and 2023 Youth Solo Latin Champion.

Matthew’s passion for ballroom dancing began at a young age while watching Strictly Come Dancing. “It was something I related to and knew I’d like to do. It has become a way of life for me. My first competition was in 2017, at seven years old at a local festival. It was hard, and I didn’t win anything,” he said.

Through dedication, Matthew progressed from practising once a week to 10 hours weekly. He now holds six titles, including two international ones. “The international titles surprise me, especially after transitioning from junior to youth. It fills me with pride and gratitude to see how far I’ve come. I’m not the best in the country, but being selected for the top three by international judges means a lot in my craft.”

Matthew aims to secure his South African Colours in December at the South African Dance Foundation’s SA Championships in Durban. To prepare, he trains with coach Alain Rijnvis of Dance2Dance Studio in Kloof. “He’s been my coach from the start and supports me in all competitions. I’m grateful to him.”

To fund his competitions, Matthew and his brother, Sheldon Belling, offer bee removal services. “Competitions are costly, and this helps cover expenses. I wish there was more support for the sport as it’s just as significant as all others.”

Matthew eagerly awaits his next competition, seeking his third international title.
