Cook-off finalists make hearty meals

The first annual Flavours on Fire Cook-off took place at Waterfall Oxford Freshmarket.

THE first annual Flavours on Fire Cook-off at Waterfall Oxford Freshmarket was bursting with flavours as three finalists battled it out on Saturday, September 28.

The participants were given two hours of over-the-fire cooking to braai/make a delicious Heritage Day dish.

The three finalists were Shovanie Devraj of Keep Calm and Curry On, and Kristen Isabella Steenkamp and

Dustin Malinga of Maya Braai and Spit Braai Catering.

Tubal Angiah, from the main sponsor, Pet Pool and Home, said it was a beautiful environment, and they were proud to be part of this event.

“The finalists displayed their impressive cooking skills, and everyone was patiently waiting to taste the delicious meals prepared,” he said.

Paul Beltramo, Oxford managing director, said this should be an annual event. “We are hoping to make it even bigger next year with six to eight people. We are also celebrating the brands of South Africa and are thankful to all the sponsors, participants and judges for an amazing day,” he said.

Winner Shovanie Devraj said she was ecstatic that she won.

“I am happy that I was able to showcase my great flavours and authentic Durban curry. I would like to thank Oxford, the judges and all the sponsors; it was such a pleasure being part of the competition,” she said.
