Pitlochry Primary School crowned as coding champions

The Pitlochry Primary School coding team celebrate their victory as champions of the Mandela Unplugged Coding Tournament.

PITLOCHRY Primary School is set to represent the country in the Mandela Unplugged Coding Tournament for primary and secondary schools after coming out victoriously as overall winners in all levels. Coding using the Rangers and Tanks games powered by TangibleAfrica, the team of Grade Seven learners were the overall winners at the Regional Tournament in which 20 teams from the Kranskloof Circuit competed.

They moved on to the Provincial Tournament where Tangible Africa raised the challenge in which 165 learners from primary and secondary schools participated using the Du Toit Agri Juicy Gems App. KZN was the first and only province in which the app was used for competitive coding.
“Winners from the 28 sites participated, and Pitlochry Primary School won the Provincial Tournament and were the proud representative of KZN at the National Tournament,” reported the school.

The National tournament was held in September – this was a virtual Tournament with 20 unseen levels which had to be completed in 60 minutes. The criteria were the number of levels completed, number of attempts and time taken to complete the game.

“Pitlochry Primary School completed the 20 levels with single attempts and in 14 minutes and 46 seconds, placing them in first position in South Africa. The Pitlochry coding team was placed first in the Junior Level and first as the overall winners of the National Tournament.”

The School Governing Body, principal and staff commend the Pitlochry Team composed of learners, Shay Hardavnarain, Amiran Pillay, Caleb Munsamy, Adhir Sarawan and Shuver Sadapal, and the teachers who were coaches as well as the team manager.

School principal Dhanabalan Padayachee indicated that a major shift in curriculum planning and implementation was instrumental in the success of the school team. “We wish Team Pitlochry all the best as they progress to represent South Africa in the International Tournament. The future seems bright as these learners ‘STEAM’ ahead in the Fourth Industrial Revolution. The learners are preparing for the next competition that will be held in December.”
