Free workshop on wills helped attendees plan for the future

Hillcrest AIDS Centre Trust collaborated with a local company to educate the community on the importance of legal wills.

IN the spirit of Ubuntu and with the awareness of National Wills Week, the Hillcrest AIDS Centre Trust (HACT) partnered with Marsh Fidelity (Pty) Ltd for a free public workshop on legal wills which was held on-site at HACT on Thursday, September 12.

Over 40 people, including legal and banking professionals, as well as HACT staff, volunteers and community-based crafters and gogos (grandmothers), attended the informative session which was aimed at adding financial literacy and awareness to the legal process and the benefits of having a will in place.

Candace Moolman, CEO of HACT, said HACT has a holistic approach to building healthy and empowered communities. “Having a last will and testament is an element of financial literacy which is often forgotten but can give people both peace of mind and can also make a difficult time easier for loved ones left behind.

“Regardless of where anyone lives or the size of their estate, a will is an important document for people across all walks of life.”

Wills Week was a timely opportunity to present this information to educate and create greater awareness among community members.

A time for Q&A brought up discussions on traditional land ownership, marital status, safekeeping of a will document and child guardianship. As part of the day, on-site drafting and printing of wills was offered as a free and non-obligatory service to those who were interested.

Daniel Marsh, director of Marsh Fidelity, added, “There is so much empowerment to us all in having valid wills in place. I see having a will as an act of service, love and care for those we love the most.”
