LEARNERS from Mnamatha Primary School were equipped with knowledge at the Passport to High School programme hosted at the Hillcrest Library recently. The programme is aimed at senior primary school learners to help them with the transition to high school. Grade Six and Seven learners of Mnamatha Primary School in Embo listened intently to presentations by the Durban Metro Police, the Jess Foord Foundation and the eThekwini Fire Department.

Unpacking the course of the day, senior librarian Sandile Seoka said the programme is for safety and self-awareness, aimed at ensuring that children know what to do in various emergencies. Presentations by the various organisations were fun and entertainment-based to help break down the message to the learner audience.
Sibusiso Mthethwa of the Jess Foord Foundation relayed to the learners the importance of self-awareness and setting boundaries for their bodies. Using songs and dance moves, Mbatha cautioned learners to report anyone who touches their bodies inappropriately. Captain Khuzwayo of the metro police also used songs and dance techniques to teach learners on road safety, such as observing before crossing the road and walking on the pedestrian pavement.

The day ended with a presentation from the fire department where they showed learners how the fire truck operates and the learners enjoyed a tour in the truck.
