Church celebrates 50 years of God’s goodness

The Hillcrest Presbyterian Church reminisces on the good times and hard times as they celebrate their 50th anniversary.

THE Hillcrest Presbyterian Church is celebrating its 50th anniversary, thrilled by its growth in the community. Starting as a small church in Pinetown, Pastor Brian Smith said the church has expanded to Hillcrest and Molweni with impactful ministers.

“Fifty years ago, there was no Presbyterian Church in Hillcrest, so people met around Kassier Road for two years. The group grew, and this church was built,” he said.

Now with 240 members, the church provides a spiritual home and spreads its message to neighbouring communities like Molweni. “We have a weekly food programme, distributing food to the community, our members and our Molweni branch. Our Molweni branch, established less than 10 years ago, meets every Sunday and is financially supported by us,” explained Smith.

Smith said the 50th anniversary signifies God’s goodness and faithfulness through the hardships and the good moments. “We’ve been through a lot, including the 2011 tornado and Covid. This celebration signifies God’s faithfulness to us. We were prophesied to be the watchmen of the community, and we pray for the community from that standpoint.”

The church’s youth programmes are thriving, with initiatives like a workshop for young people who didn’t pass matric, a study techniques workshop and a youth holiday camp. “Our youth and children’s minister headed these programmes, which are impactful and fulfilling their purpose,” said Smith.
