Learn to crochet from crafty Msomi

Self-taught crafter Hilda Msomi enjoys imparting her skills to anyone who is willing to learn.

IF you’re interested in learning how to crochet but don’t have anyone to teach you, Hilda Msomi, a resident at Queensburgh Cheshire Home, may be able to help you.

Msomi has lived at the home since 2011 and possesses vast knowledge on the craft, all self-taught, which she would love to impart to anyone willing to learn.

“I can’t remember my exact age, but I was a little girl when I first started to crochet. Nobody taught it to me – it was just through trial and error that I learnt, and of course, there was no internet or videos (YouTube) where one could watch and learn,” said Msomi.

She started with the basics by first just getting a feel for the needles and material she would use before progressing onto a simple doily pattern. After making a few doilies, Msomi’s confidence grew, and she decided to attempt a jersey pattern.

“I crocheted a jersey for myself. Wow, it was beautiful, and I was so proud of my masterpiece. My family and friends liked it so much and asked me to make clothing for them, too. I find it therapeutic,” she said.

“I know so much about the craft, but I have no family to pass the knowledge on to, so I would like to teach people how to crochet. I noticed that there are many people who want to sew, crochet or knit to make their own things for themselves or their homes. It will be cheaper and unique. It’s also nice to crochet items for people and gift it to them. You could also start a business,” added Msomi.
