Child therapy centre grateful for generous donation from Suncoast East Coast Big Walk

The Khethiwe Rehabilitation Centre in Mariannhill is grateful for the unwavering support.

THE community of Khethiwe Rehabilitation Centre are happy to continue with their work for another year as they received a generous donation of R100 000. This was after the centre was the charity beneficiary for the Suncoast East Coast Big Walk in May. Khethiwe is a therapy centre where children with cerebral palsy and other neurological impairments, from disadvantaged communities, who cannot afford to pay for it, can go for comprehensive treatment.

This donation comes shortly after the centre received a donation of wheelchairs from an organisation abroad. Khethiwe’s CEO, Glenys Ross, said they have been busy this year selecting, fitting and delivering all the wonderful equipment they received.

“We have been up lots of hills and crossed more than one stream carrying heavy equipment, but the results have been so worth it. Our families are delighted. Many people have been reduced to tears. This year has truly surpassed our wildest dreams. We’re a quiet, passionate NGO [non-government organisation] with big dreams, and this year, we have seen so many come true.

“The funding from the Big Walk will enable us to cover costs from delivery as our families can only make a token contribution towards that. We also need to increase one of our part-time staff to full-time, and this bonus makes that possible. And importantly, the funds from the Big Walk mean that Khethiwe can keep going for another year, which is wonderful,” she said. Ross said the donation came in handy for them as they don’t have major funders, and this was such a boost to their finances, ensuring their viability for another year.

“Our clients are struggling to make ends meet, and we’re committed to providing a free rehabilitation service of excellence for them,” she said.
