Double Comrades Marathon run raises R160k

Highway Comrades Marathon runners show generosity to the community as they complete a double comrades marathon run for charity, raising funds for the Philakade Care Home.

PHILAKADE Care Home was ecstatic to receive an amount of R160 000, which was raised by Craig Bond and Guy Allen during their double Comrades Marathon run. Upon entering the Comrades Marathon for the seventh time, the duo succeeded in their attempt of a double marathon and raised R10 000 extra as they had aimed to raise 150 000.

Allen said the race for them started on Saturday morning at 04:30 from the Pietermaritzburg City Hall.
“It was a quiet, low-key start except for the late night / early morning revellers who were somewhat confused by the two guys running the day before Comrades in the wrong direction. The day went very well, and we managed to finish without any problems at Kingsmead Cricket Grounds 9 hours and 40 minutes later. The support, while fairly spread out, was great and added a much-needed injection of energy to us,” he said.

The next day the pair was ready for the actual race.
“After a rub-down and a massive burger, it was sleep time in order to start again. An earlier wake-up to get down to the start was in order, and both of us were feeling surprisingly fine at this stage. A great Comrades start got us in the mood, and we started trudging back up the hill to PMB. It took a while to get the blood flowing, but once we did, then it was a fantastic day out on the road. We even had an impromptu interview with Supersport at the top of Polly Shortts and then we rolled the last 7km or so to the finish,” they said.

The pair thanked the community for their support and for helping them achieve their goal.
“As far as fundraising went, we couldn’t have asked for more. An initial target of R150 000 was set, and we thought that this was unachievable, to be honest. At the end of the campaign, however, we managed to get to an incredible R160 000 of much-needed funds for Philakade Care Home. Thanks to each and every person who donated; you are the real heroes,” they said.
