Suspected gas explosion leads to fire in Pinetown
Pinetown residents are urged to stay at a safe distance as emergency services attend to a fire caused by an explosion on Old Main Road.
EMERGENCY services are at the scene after an explosion occurred in Pinetown on Old Main Road near Bargain Basket.
Start Rescue reported that they received reports of the explosion just before 10:00 this morning.

“We received reports from the local neighbourhood watch of a loud explosion followed by smoke and fire in the vicinity of Bargain Basket. Members of the neighbourhood watch went to investigate and found plumes of smoke emanating from the building near a car dealership that shares a parking lot with Bargain Basket,” reported a source.
It has also been reported that it is not clear what caused the explosion.

“Reports have come through from various reliable sources that it was a possible gas-bottle explosion,”
No reports of any injuries or fatalities have been received. The area has been cordoned off and will form part of an ongoing investigation by members of the SAPS.
