Weight-loss journey leads to Comrades Marathon race

Njabulo Khuzwayo is proud that his weight loss journey led him to participate in three Comrades Marathon races.

A COMRADES Marathon runner’s weight-loss journey led to him completing three Comrades Marathon races. Preparing for his fourth this year, Njabulo Khuzwayo is happy to have come this far in his running.

Khuzwayo is from Molweni and works at Curro Hillcrest. Starting with a PDAC 25km race, the athlete never looked back.
“When I started running, the aim was to lose weight and be fit. I would run short distances a few hours before work and long distances when I was off. My colleagues here suggested that I join a running club – that’s where I was inspired to do more races and one being the Comrades Marathon,” he said.

Khuzwayo said running has yielded positive results for him apart from the weight loss. “Running has been good for my mental health; it has also shifted my perspective. Finishing a race shows you how much more you can achieve when you set your mind to it. It only took a few runs to propel me forward to where I am now, preparing for my fourth Comrades Marathon.
“I am also inspired by my family – my wife, daughter, nieces and nephews. It is inspiring to know how much they support me in this journey – I am doing it for them. It is also heartwarming and encouraging to meet people who cheer for the runners during the race, ” he said.

For this year’s Comrades Marathon, Khuzwayo said he is aiming to beat his last finishing time of 10 hours and 11 minutes.
“I am not looking to get any particular award but to beat my last finishing time. I am aiming for a finishing time of nine hours this time. This would be a great achievement for me,” he said.

Khuzwayo said he is currently preparing for the Comrades Marathon. “My preparation forms a part of my daily routine, I still do short distances a few hours before work and long distances when I am off. The race will be a continuation of what I do almost every day, which is running,’ he said.
Khuzwayo said he is grateful to his colleagues and parents at the school who welcomed him into the running community.
