Westville’s VC Cares reaches out to children’s home

Students in the IIE's Varsity College in Westville take part in a good cause.

THROUGH the IIE’s Varsity College in Westville’s student volunteer body, VC Cares, the St Martin’s Diocesan Home for Children recently received a donation to help with the everyday running of the home.

Housing 74 children and based in Berea, Durban, the children’s home is for children who are victims of abuse, abandoned or orphaned. The home also houses children whose families are not able to provide for them.

Engaging their first-year students during orientation week, Varsity College in Westville’s VC Cares donated packs of toilet rolls, sanitary towels and other toiletries.

“We encouraged our first-year students to buy stickers to support the Everyday Hero Campaign. The money raised from the campaign was allocated towards the purchasing of the toiletries,” stated the school.

A second-year student at Varsity College, Ande Shabalala, was proud to be part of the initiative.
“Being a part of this campaign was truly heartwarming. The campaign encouraged students to be a hero in a child’s life. Being able to make a difference in the community has helped me to become socially aware and has encouraged me to empower myself and to continue to help those in need,” he said.

Receiving the donation, the hospitality manager at the home, Mandy Muller, said the donation would make a difference for their residents.
“We are an NPO and rely a lot on assistance from the community. If we are assisted with core items, it allows us to use the financial means we do have for the running of the home,” she said.
