Hillcrest High School Interact Club on another mission

Hillcrest High School learners raise funds for a community project.

A GROUP of Hillcrest High School (HHS) learners are working hard to fundraise for their involvement in the Dr Turnbull School Upgrade Project, a community outreach event that will take place later this year.

To raise funds for their participation in the school renovation project at an underprivileged school, the group shadow-shifted at a local restaurant this Wednesday for a percentage of the takings for the night.

The Hillcrest High School (HHS) Interact Club is an outward-facing community outreach initiative established in partnership with Rotary. In addition to raising funds for the materials, the learners will undertake the cleaning, preparation and painting of classrooms in a school from one of the under-resourced schools in the neighbouring semi-rural communities surrounding the Hillcrest area.

Bryan Moffatt, who heads the Interact Club, said, “What a great way to give back, end a busy school term or celebrate the first quarter of the year, without any additional cost to you. We are incredibly grateful to the Eldorado Spur, who have agreed to donate 10% of the night’s takings to the Interact Club.”

This week will be the second week the Interact Club has participated in ‘shadow-shift’ work at the restaurant after raising over R3 000 between the donated funds from night’s takings and tips given to the learners via Zapper.

In other projects, the HHS Interact Club in 2023 collaborated with learners from another high school in the area to renovate six classrooms at the Khanyakhwezi Primary School in KwaNqetho, Qiniselani Manyuswa, as part of the Dr Turnbull School Upgrade Project.

“The learners funded the material costs and spent a week of their July school holidays working to restore the classrooms, some of which were in such poor condition, they required the replacement of the plasterwork. To add a personal touch, two colourful murals were completed, allowing the artistic members to put their skills to good use.

“The Hillcrest High School motto, ‘If it is to be, it is up to me,’ not only encourages learners to take ownership and accountability for their own successes but to work to help those less fortunate,” said Moffatt.

This year, the HHS Interact Club will again tackle an outreach renovation project during the July school holidays.
