Former police member appears in court

Nokulunga Gumede was charged for the unauthorised removal of an inmate from the Westville Correctional Service Centre.

THE case of a former police member, who appeared in the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court for obstructing the course of justice and unauthorised removal of an inmate from the correctional service centre, was postponed to March 27.

According to HAWKS, Nokulunga Gumede was employed by the South African Police Service as a Branch Commander, holding the rank of Captain at KwaMakhutha Police Station.

“It is alleged that on April 17, 2020, the former captain went to Westville Prison and booked out her biological son without being in possession of proper documents from the court. This was allegedly done without the knowledge of the investigating officer. Her son was detained for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

Gumede took him to court, and the matter was not placed on the roll due to Covid-19 restrictions. She then took him home, and a case of obstructing the course of justice and unauthorised removal of an inmate from correctional service centre was reported,” said HAWKS spokesperson Simphiwe Mhlongo.

Mhlongo said the case docket was allocated to Hawks members from Durban Serious Corruption Investigation, and a summons was issued.
