Local drummies set to compete internationally

Two athletes of the Eagles Majorette Club prepare for international competition in July this year.

GOING onto their third year this year, the Eagles Majorette Club is happy to have two of their team members represent them at the International Association of Majorettes World Championships.

Eagles’ Coach Elmarie Samuel said they are incredibly proud of their two athletes, Lauren Mc Farlane and Asanda Mazibuko, who recently received their Federation of Dance Drill, Cheerleading and Majorettes of South Africa (FDDCMSA) National Awards, leading them to the international competition that will take place in July 2024 in France.

“Asanda started drummies in 2021 and marched for Forest View Primary School before joining The Eagles Majorette Club when she started Grade Eight at Hillcrest High School. Even though she is only 13 years old, she has shown great leadership and leads our Senior team as the team captain. She received both her KZN and Provincial Junior FDDCMSA Awards in 2023.

“Lauren started drummies in the early 90s and marched as leader of Pinetown Girls’ High School in 1994. After being out of the sport for a few decades, she made a return as part of the Eagles Majorette Club’s Tertiary team. What makes this so remarkable is that she’s been living in Tanzania for the past 10 years. Lauren learnt all the displays virtually and flew to Durban to compete in the SA Champs with her team. She then did a virtual trial and received both her KZN and National Senior FDDCMSA Awards. This shows real commitment and passion for the sport,” explained Samuel.

Each athlete is expected to pay for their own travel costs, which is close to R50 000 per person.
“We would like to call on the community and local businesses to see if they can support Asanda in making her dream come true,” she said.

Samuel said their team has made great strides in the year of 2023.
“We achieved four top three placements at the KZN Majorette and Cheerleading Association Provincial Championships. Six of our displays qualified to compete at the SA Championships, which were held in Durban during the July holidays. We won two medals (silver for Tertiary Small Mace Group and bronze for Large Flag Group) at the SA Champs. Seven athletes received their Regional Awards with FDDCMSA. Lastly, two athletes received their National Awards with FDDCMSA,” she said.

Asanda Mazibuko is heading to France to compete at the International Association of Majorettes World Championships in France. July 2024.
