New Year’s celebrations a nightmare for animals this year

The Kloof and Highway SPCA unpacks the aftermath of the New Year celebration activities.

THE Kloof and Highway SPCA has described the end of 2023 as one of the loudest and saddest years with animals’ surroundings being turned into what resembled a war zone with the continuous loud bangs leading up to and after December 31.

From December 31, 2023, to January 1, the Kloof SPCA said they admitted 19 dogs, 22 cats and four birds.

“We are disappointed at the number of fireworks used over the New Year’s period with complete disregard for not only domestic animals but also for our precious wildlife. Our inspectorate team worked after hours helping pet owners find their animals as well as dealing with sick and injured animals during this period,” said the Kloof and Highway SPCA’s Brigitte Ferguson.

She reported that over December, the Kloof and Highway SPCA’s reception admitted 750 animals, which is an average of 24 animals per day.

“If you are missing a pet, we ask that you contact your local SPCA as soon as possible to help relieve the high volume of animals [we receive] as well as to ensure missing pets and their owners are happily reunited.

“If you have found a pet, we also ask that you contact your local SPCA and do a Found Report with them as many people do not have access to social media or community WhatsApp groups and therefore check their local SPCA for their missing pet – they would never know how to locate their beloved pet if it were not reported by the finder,” she said.

Ferguson thanked all the kind people who stopped to pick up frightened animals and brought them to safety, and she conveyed gratitude to the community for their unwavering support during this difficult time.

“Although we are disappointed with the start to 2024, we are positive that this will be a year of change and continue to stand for our cause – Preventing Cruelty to Animals. We can only do this with your support!” she added.
