Bargain hunter always up for a market

Avid Malvern thrifter talks about her love for local markets.

IF there’s a flea market happening around Malvern or anywhere in Durban, in fact, you can bet your last penny that you will meet Dee du Toit there.

The avid thrifter, who hails from Escombe, started scouting markets for treasures and hidden gems in 2010 when she moved to Durban.

Since then, she has bought everything from local markets.

“What I enjoy most about going to a market to shop is that you don’t know what you’re going to find. With commercial stores, you kind of have an idea because of their large-scale advertising, but at markets, there’s always treasure of some sort waiting,” she said.

“I love the thrill of finding a diamond in the rough. I also prefer to shop local and support local during these tough times,” added du Toit.

Over the years, the thrift shopper has been to just about every market in Durban with her favourites being the Malvern Flea Market, Dutch Club Market, Golden Hours Market and the boot sale near the Greyville Race Course.

“You will also find me at the Escombe Friday Market bright and early every week hunting for that unique piece to add to my home,” she added.

While Du Toit can’t remember exactly what the first item she purchased at a flea market was, she’s certain that it was something for her garden as she loves gardening. She has numerous pots for her plants, beautiful garden furniture, picture frames, wine-bottle holders and lanterns.

“I have also got more than a hundred pairs of jeans in my cupboard, but only five fit,” she said, laughing.

Prior to the Covid-19 Pandemic, Du Toit spent close to R4 000 at markets monthly but has cut back since.

“I encourage everyone to support local markets. There are beautiful items waiting for you there, and you’re helping a breadwinner put food on the table,” she said.
