On the morning of the race, Steytler said he awoke to the promise of a scorching day with temperatures soaring to 35 degrees Celsius.

“My race day routine unfolded as usual – a meticulous series of preparations that involved acquainting myself with the transition area, finding the fastest route to my bike, an easy warm-up run and some sprints in the swim to get my body ready to race.

The 20-year-old said he managed to come out the swim with the leaders, which set him up for a great day.

“On the bike, I maintained my position within the lead group while feeling comfortable and conserving energy. As I dismounted for the final leg, a swift transition created a little gap out of transition.

“I sprinted out of transition, steadily increasing my lead throughout the run. This strategic approach spared me the pressure of summoning a last-minute sprint for victory. It was great day of tough racing,” said the champ.

He congratulated all the athletes who endured the gruelling conditions.
