Westville Girls’ High School learner makes strides in softball

Catherine Young makes it to the Great Britain softball team.

WESTVILLE Girls’ High School learner Catherine Young was selected to play the Great Britain (national England, Scotland and Wales) softball team.

The 17-year-old was selected to play in the annual event which attracted teams from the East, Australia, the Netherlands and the USA to the Canada Cup. Catherine’s father, Terry Young, said the young athlete has been playing from the age of 13. “Having a British passport, she was requested by a scout to remit videos of her playing to England,” he said.

Catherine made it to the team after being assessed according to the following criteria:

Team Player: Demonstrates a strong commitment to teamwork, effectively communicates with teammates and actively contributes to fostering a positive team environment.

Strategic Base-running: Exhibits sound decision-making when on the bases, consistently making well-thought-out moves and taking appropriate leads to contribute to the team’s success.

Reliable Fielding: Consistently showcases dependable fielding skills, making accurate throws and consistently making clean catches, contributing to the team’s defensive strength.

Hitting Accuracy: Strives for more consistent ball contact, aiming to reduce strikeouts and enhance the quality of contact with the ball.

Self-Confidence: Focusing on building greater self-assurance can positively impact on-field performance and decision-making, helping the athlete reach their full potential.

The softball player received her Honours Blazer from her school and is vice-captain of all her school first-team sports: hockey indoor and outdoor, water polo and softball. She was also previously selected to play KZN U16 Cricket. She aims to go on to play in the Olympics and to further study Biokinetics after matric.
