Key Bricks – unlocking the future of building on the African continent

Imagine building a house without needing mortar between the bricks!

A new building block has now been launched in KwaZulu-Natal, and throughout South Africa, that will transform the future and the speed of construction.

Introducing Key Bricks. This new interlocking brick system tightly locks bricks together and works on a similar principle to the world-famous plastic blocks that keep children entertained for hours.

According to Key Bricks’ marketing and sales director, Andre Swanepoel, once a standard foundation has been laid and the first course of bricks has been mortared to the foundation, the shell of a two-bedroom, 41 square metre, entry level home can be constructed to roof-level in one day. Swanepoel says this process does not require expensive, skilled labour and becomes a job creation opportunity for local communities, wherever construction is taking place.

Key Bricks are designed with holes to allow for electrical and plumbing to be added at the start of any construction process. Due to the precision nature of the construction, by using Key Bricks, windows and doors can also be pre-ordered ahead of time to speed up construction of the building.

The rugged brickmaking machine that manufactures Key Bricks can be wired as single-phase or coupled to a generator, and be transported to the middle of nowhere to manufacture these unique interlocking bricks. Swanepoel said huge cost savings are realised when it comes to transporting bricks to any building site. He said a special trailer is currently being designed that will enable the brickmaking machine to be transported anywhere.

A wonderful feature of the interlocking Key Bricks is that they are environmentally friendly. South Africa is littered with the illegal dumping of building rubble and the amount of discarded glass bottles in our environment, has started reaching alarming levels, explained Swanepoel.

Key Bricks comprises of 48 per cent crushed building rubble and 20 per cent crushed glass. According to Swanepoel, this ensures that wherever Key Bricks are used, the construction site will be cleared of any form of building rubble, which is certain to be illegally dumped in the environment.

Key Bricks are manufactured and sold at Key Bricks’ Hammarsdale Brickyard, located at the Use-It Waste Recycling Initiative – a building and rubble waste recycling project, some 50km west of Durban.

“Intensive and practical research has gone into various mixes in the manufacturing of these interlocking bricks by the team at Use-It, and this makes the product absolutely unique while unlocking the future of building in South Africa,” he said.

“The Key Bricks manufacturing machine is an incredible opportunity for entrepreneurs looking to start a profitable new business with a product that will be in great demand,” added Swanepoel.

The Key Bricks machine costs R395 000 (excluding Vat) and Swanepoel said funding can be obtained via the national banks, for approved applicants.
