International Hangover Day: How to recover like a pro

The more alcohol you drink, the more likely you are to have a hangover the next day, but there may be a magic formula to help you get over that babalaas really quick.

WHETHER you call it a hangover or a babalaas, many have felt the aftereffects of overindulging from the night before, so much so, that there’s a day dedicated to it.

International Hangover Day comes after International Beer Day which was established by the Association of California Brewers in 2007.

While there are many ways to recover from a hangover, one of the latest fixer-uppers is by means of an IV recovery drip. No need to lay in bed all day with a headache.

What actually causes a hangover? Consuming alcohol results in water being removed from the body via urination. This causes many of the symptoms of a hangover, such as a dry mouth, headache, fatigue and nausea.

Dr Sophie Ramsaroop, a general practitioner in Malvern, has a passion for aesthetic medicine and integrative health, which includes the use of various IV drips.

“IV therapy is becoming increasingly popular as the effects are immediate and patients report that they feel better afterwards. Absorption of IV therapy is better as it bypasses the stomach and is given directly into the bloodstream. This is important for people who suffer from peptic ulcer or gastrointestinal reflux disease or have absorption issues such as with irritable bowel syndrome. It provides a good detox and hydration for the body,” she said.

The drip given to patients who have had a rough night is called the recovery drip. It’s also given to sportsmen and fitness trainers and diabetic patients on Glucophage or Metformin as they sometimes develop a vitamin B12 deficiency as an adverse effect.

“The recovery drip is made up of thiamine (vitamin B1), riboflavin (vitamin B2), nicotinamide (vitamin B3), pantothenic acid (vitamin B5), pyridoxine (vitamin B6), methylcobalamin (vitamin B12), magnesium sulphate and glutathione. This potent combination provides an energy boost, detoxification of the liver and kidneys, muscle recovery and hydration. It will make anyone feel better after a hangover or any strenuous circumstance,” said Dr Ramsaroop.

She said it provides a detox, balances electrolytes and rehydrates the body with 1 litre of fluid. This drip is also great for gymgoers and athletes to aid with recovery. It is also great for vegetarians and diabetics who are often deficient in vitamin B12.

“Patients come in with severe muscle cramps or dehydration and leave smiling after a recovery infusion,” she said.
