Alcohol Awareness Week – 3 winter mocktails to try

Not only are these mocktails alcohol-free but they may just be the perfect winter warmer for you to enjoy.

THIS week (July 3–9) marks Alcohol Awareness Week – which aims to raise awareness about the dangers of alcohol abuse. In light of this theme, we put our heads together to come up with some alcohol-free mocktail ideas to enjoy in the cool winter weather.

  1. Glühwein – minus the hangover

With its unique blend of sugar, spice and all things nice, mulled wine is a winter warmer like no other. There are plenty of recipes online that promise to deliver the same delicious taste and cosy vibes without the booze.

Grab a pot and place on low heat on the stovetop. To the pot add: 2 cups of pomegranate juice, a stick of cinnamon, 1 star anise, 4–5 cloves, 2–3 tablespoons of sugar and one sliced orange. An optional addition is a 750ml bottle of non-alcoholic red wine. Allow the mixture to heat until steam rises from the pot and then turn off the heat.

2. Wholesome Hot Toddy

Traditionally made with whiskey, this recipe opts for proudly South African rooibos instead – enjoy it hot or cold for a mocktail with a health kick. Brew a bag of rooibos in 125ml hot water. Add a teaspoon of honey and a teaspoon of lemon juice as well as a dash of nutmeg and cinnamon. Top it up with 125ml juice of your choice – apple or orange juice make great choices.

3. Creamy mint mocktail

This decadent, dessert-like drink will leave you in ‘mint’ condition with its blend of healthy ingredients. Start by making a simple syrup by combining 2 tablespoons of sugar with 100ml of boiled water.  Let it cool and combine 15ml of the sugar syrup with 1/2 a cup of mint leaves, 125ml cold water and 125ml coconut milk or coconut cream. Mix this in a blender and add additional sugar syrup to taste if required. Serve with a fresh lemon or lime slice.
