AN ASSAGAY couple is happy to be celebrating 65 years of their marriage on Wednesday, June 28. Three great-grandchildren, two grandchildren and two children later, June and Derrick Reid are happy to have met and created their own lives together.
The couple said they met in 1957 when Derrick came to work where June was a receptionist. “I was working at my family business as a receptionist. He disappeared after a while, and when he came back, we dated for nine months and got married thereafter,” said June.

The couple met when they still lived in Malawi and relocated to South Africa over the years.
Derrick said the sole decision to got married was because they were in love, and everything else followed. “My wife is an all-rounder and matches my personality. She cares for our family, and that has kept us going,” he said.
June echoed her husband’s sentiment, saying she is always happy to be taken care of by her husband and their children.
The couple said their proudest achievement is growing their family and how their children have become independent individuals with their own families.
“Even though we cannot be together all the time because our son lives abroad now, it is good to know that we have them, and we are a close family,” they said.

The couple believe that patience and working together have helped them stay together for 65 years.
“Working towards something is what kept us together – knowing that we were trying to build a future for our family and putting our children through school are what kept us going,” they said.
The couple encouraged young couples to understand each other and to not easily give up as family is an important structure in one’s life.
