Durban teen celebrates Star Wars Day

Star Wars Day is a commemorative day to celebrate all things from the Star Wars universe.

ADVENTURE, friendship, fantastical characters, memorable quotes and of course, lightsabers.

These are some of the reasons why fans from all over the galaxy love the Star Wars universe.

It is also the reason why teenager Cheyénne Pinn fell in love with the series after watching Episode IV: A New Hope six years ago.

She, along with millions of fans, is celebrating Thursday, May 4, or as many know it, Star Wars Day. The day, largely informal, is a commemorative day to celebrate all things from the Star Wars universe.

Fans jokingly say ‘May the 4th be with you’, a reference to the popular phrase in the ‘May the Force be with you’.

For Cheyénne, the films have brought her passion into the spotlight, and she has a number of fandom items related to the series, including T-shirts, face masks, plush toys and a number of other items.

“I remember watching the first film four years ago, and I was instantly captivated – I was definitely transported to a galaxy far, far away. It started with the original film trilogy before I started exploring the backstories of some of the other characters in their respective books and book series. I’m big into action and adventure, and I felt each film and series after that has captured that feeling,” she explained.

Cheyénne added that her favourite character in the canon of the Star Wars stories is Han Solo.

“Han is my absolute favourite character because I love Harrison Ford, the actor who portrays him, and I just enjoy his character. I love him in the Indiana Jones movies, too, but he really brings the character to life in Star Wars. I love his banter with Chewbacca and Obi-Wan and, of course, Princess Leia. I’m also a fan of the female characters like Ahsoka Tano and Rey in the later films,” she said.

The matriculant at Danville Park Girls’ High School also has a growing number of incredible Star Wars collectibles.

“I have puzzles, T-shirts, some figurines, plushy toys and a few of the books. I even have a LEGO Millennium Falcon (Han Solo’s starship) which I built. My ultimate collector’s piece would have to be a lightsaber or a LEGO Death Star,” she explained.
