According to the department, the Small Claims Courts provide a platform for ordinary South Africans to access justice without encountering the high costs of litigation. The service of presiding over the tens of thousands of Small Claims Court matters in a year is provided by a team of dedicated Commissioners from both the Judiciary and the legal fraternity.

The ceremony was to celebrate the milestones in service, dedication, loyalty and contribution to the work of the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development and South African citizens at large.

Mustard is part of the team of commissioners as he serves the Highway area. The attorney has been a Highway resident from his early childhood years when his parents emigrated from Scotland to South Africa.

“Since shortly after our arrival in South Africa, I have resided and worked in the Highway area. I have been practising as an attorney in Pinetown since 1973, and in 2022, my office relocated to Kloof.

“I studied law at Natal University. I did my articles with the law firm, McClung Le Marchand and Goudge, in Pinetown. I was admitted as an attorney in 1973 and became a partner in the firm, which became known as McClung, Goudge and Mustard. It is now known as McClung Mustard. In 2022, the firm relocated its offices from Pinetown to Kloof,” he said.
