Recycling site reaches greater heights

The Keep Hillcrest Beautiful Association gets recognition for their recycling centre and launches more projects to keep their purpose going.

THE Keep Hillcrest Beautiful Association (KHBA) accepted an award for being the community recycling site with the highest tonnage collected of paper and cardboard. The award was handed out by Mpact, a recycling company in South Africa that collects recovered recyclables.

Presenting the award, Nolita Ngcaba, who is a procurement representative at Mpact, said the award to KHBA is part of their school and community programme where they run numerous pick-up programmes via schools, communities and offices to create awareness and push recycling levels to new heights.

“Every year, we award our top-performing community sites. We award 10 community sites and measure the volume received for the year. We hand over a certificate as a token of appreciation for all their efforts to promote a cleaner and more beautiful environment, which also raises the level of awareness in their community,” said Ngcaba.

Marge Mitchell of the KHBA said they were grateful for the award. “We are grateful for our hard-working staff, Doris Mazeka and Vukani Cele, who keep the centre well-run and tidy. The site is very popular with members of the public, and it is well-supported,” she said.

The award comes after the association partnered with the Robin Hood Foundation and utilised the landscaping expertise of Landmark Landscapes for a fundraising initiative.

Mitchell said the teaming up of the three organisations is a triple bonus for the area which will be beautified by Landmark Landscapes in coordination with Keep Hillcrest Beautiful Association and the fundraising expertise of the Robin Hood Foundation, which has committed to a contract of one year with Landmark Landscapes.

“All residents and businesses in the Upper Highway area can help ensure this effort is a success by supporting the initiative to maintain and beautify the area and the environment, which ultimately benefits all who live and work and visit the area,” she said.

The area that will be maintained will be from the M13 off-ramp into Hillcrest to the Kassier Road intersection – excluding those that are maintained by Keep Hillcrest Beautiful.

Community members who are interested in supporting this initiative can contact the Keep Hillcrest Beautiful Association on 083 419 3807 or mmitchell@tiscali.co.za.
