Rewriting the standards of beauty

Tara Linn Govender is determined to represent not only her hometown but her beliefs at the 2023 Miss Grand SA beauty pageant.

WESTVILLE’S advocate for scoliosis, Tara-Linn Govender, has taken the stance to use her platform to spread awareness.

Entering the Miss Grand SA beauty pageant will see Govender tell her story and rewrite social beauty standards. The 21-year-old was diagnosed with scoliosis a few years back, which left her with not only scars but a transformed mindset.

“Scars are a remembrance of the battles that you have faced and overcome throughout your life. I am an advocate for scoliosis awareness, body positivity and healthy living, and I am passionate about getting affordable and good quality healthcare for children. As a person that felt like I could never fit into the world, I strive to achieve my dreams in order to help and inspire others to chase theirs. My philosophy in life is, ‘Chase your dreams no matter how crazy and unrealistic they seem to others. You are the only one that can make them a reality.’”

With her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Live Performance from the University of AFDA, the actress and model has launched an online campaign called Industry Speak-Up which aims to help women, men and children navigate the entertainment industry safely as there are many online predators contributing to the increase in human trafficking.

The 21-year-old is set to grace the stage of Miss Grand SA in July this year which will be held in Pretoria. The aim of the competition is to find an ambassador who advocates for the injustices of the world by using their voice and critical thinking. The public is welcome to show support to Govender on her Instagram account:
