Five suspects nabbed for attempted murder

Pinetown police were successful in tracing the suspects who fled during a shoot-out with the police.

FOUR suspects appeared at the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court for attempted murder and possession of property suspected to be stolen. The Pinetown Police reported that this came after one of the four suspects was arrested on March 5, while the other fled.

“Members of Pinetown Tactical Response Team were on duty in New Germany when they were flagged down by a woman who pointed at a vehicle with suspects who had attempted to rob her. When police approached, the suspects fired shots towards the police and a shoot-out ensued. One suspect was arrested, and the other suspects ran away,” said Pinetown communications officer Bongumusa Manqele.

Upon searching the vehicle, Manqele said two knives were discovered, along with identity documents, two cellphones and a bank card.

“The suspect was placed under arrest and charged with attempted murder and possession of property suspected to be stolen. The arrested suspect appeared at the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court on March 6 and was remanded in custody to allow the police to continue with the investigation,” he said.

On Tuesday, 7 March, members of the Pinetown SAPS Tracing Unit received intelligence about the rest of the suspects who fled during the shoot-out with police.

Manqele said the police proceeded to an address in Wyebank and found four suspects hiding in a rondavel in the Ekuthuleni area.

“The suspects, aged between 15 and 34 years, were placed under arrest and also charged with attempted murder and possession of property suspected to be stolen. Items found in their vehicle were positively identified by the rightful owners,” he said.

Furthermore, the suspects have been linked to other cases of robberies committed in Pinetown and Mariannhill.
