Mosque opens its doors on Heritage Day

The idea behind the open day is to welcome individuals of various backgrounds to learn more about Islam and forge stronger connections between communities.

MOSQUES across the country will be opening their doors on Heritage Day, Saturday, September 24 as part of the National Mosque Open Day.

According to Dr Faisal Suleiman, chairperson of the South African Muslim Network (SAMNET), the idea behind the open day is to welcome individuals of various backgrounds to learn more about Islam and forge stronger connections between different religious communities.

“This is an opportunity to meet members of the local Muslim community over refreshments, to have a tour of the Mosque as well as watch a demonstration of the washing and prayer rituals. It is an opportunity to build bridges and community relationships and renew the concept of an inclusive and tolerant multicultural and multi-faith rainbow nation,” said Suleiman.

In Durban, one of the participating mosques is Musjid ur Rahmaan situated on Kenneth Kaunda Road (Northway) in Durban North.

Mosque trustee Yusuf Desai said the day is about making people of all faiths feel welcome visiting mosques.

“There will be a PowerPoint presentation on the day and a tour of the mosque. We will also have some coffee and food to offer on the day. Although this is an open day, we want the community to know the doors of our mosque are always open. If you aren’t able to make it on the day, there is always an opportunity to tour and learn more about Islam,” Desai said.

The day runs from 14:00 onwards.
