Rachel Venniker misses historic ride due to fall

The talented woman jockey will no longer compete in the Hollywoodbets Durban July this Saturday.

RACHEL Venniker was to be the first female rider to compete in the Durban July, and was to ride in the Hollywoodbets Durban July on Saturday, 2 July.

In an article on Sporting Post website, it was reported that Venniker was unseated in a race at the Hollywoodbets Greyville Racecourse in Durban on Monday and is reported to have suffered a concussion. She will no longer be competing.

The woman jockey was set to ride Red Saxon for Joey Soma in the main race at the Hollywoodbets Durban July.

This year is Hollywoodbets’ first sponsorship of the iconic Durban horse race and carries a record stake of R5m.

Venniker, a 21-year-old Summerveld resident, is a second-year apprentice jockey at the South African Jockey Academy.

She is blazing a trail for women in the horse-racing industry.
