WATCH: Highway’s snake catcher rescues juvenile black mamba

Young black mambas are always angrier than grown-ups – it’s a defence mechanism.

SNAKE catcher Nick Evans rescued a young black mamba from a property in Dawncliffe, Westville yesterday.

According to Evans, Westville residents, Suncana and Calvin Bradley, notified him about the snake on their property. Upon arrival, Evans found the young snake hidden in between a washing machine stored in a tiny protected area and the wall – a fantastic place to hide.

“The owners were lucky their dogs didn’t find it. What a relief! Juvenile black mambas are as potent as adults, even at this young age, and are extremely venomous,” Evans added.

Evans said, “Black mambas typically grow quickly. The fact that this one was still shorter than 60 centimetres surprised me.”

According to Evans, young black mambas are always angrier than grown-ups, especially at this size – it’s a defence mechanism.

Evans said that the snake was safely released into a safe environment. “It has been released away from people. Hopefully, it grows to adulthood! At this size, it will need to worry about birds, mongooses and monitor lizards.
