Hillcrest High raises funds to renovate schools in need

Hillcrest High School together with Kloof High learners will help renovate a school in Molweni.

HILLCREST High School (HHS) is excited to participate, once again, in the project to renovate local deserving schools.

For many years, the school has collaborated with Dr Margaret Turnbull, a retired headmistress from the United Kingdom, and Kloof High School, to make a difference, but sadly, this project has been halted since the Covid-19 restrictions.

“This year, Hillcrest High School learners will be joining Kloof High students in helping to renovate Dawede Primary School in Molweni. This involves cleaning of classrooms, and the scraping, washing, crack-filling and painting of walls.

“The experiences had by all past participants have always been positive – our learners often make good friends with the students from Kloof and often keep in contact long after the project is completed,” said HHS marketing manager Nicky Kidgell.

Over the course of the last two weeks, Hillcrest High learners managed to raise R10 178.20.

“This is an incredible amount of money with very little encouragement,” said a proud Kidgell.

Kidgell mentioned the top three Grade Nine classes who raised R4 276.20 altogether.

“A special mention goes to matric learners, Alice Mathebula, Courtney Wright and Natalie Dennison, who managed to raise R2 076 in their personal capacity to go toward the Turnbull project,” she said.

Other fundraising drives included some of the interact learners assisting with waitering at Eldorado Spur in Hillcrest. “On the night, we were given 10% of the profits generated between 16:00 and 19:00, along with some donations. During that night, our students managed to raise R2 912.90,” said Kidgell.

The learners also raised funds through a car-wash initiative and a table tennis tournament.
