Motorists have been advised to use alternative routes.

This comes as people are still coming to terms with the damage that was caused by the recent flooding, which claimed more than 450 lives and left thousands homeless.

According to the South African Weather Service, rain is expected to continue throughout the day as well as tomorrow, May 22.

eThekwini Municipality requested residents to try to keep safe during this period.

“The city discourages the sharing of old disaster pictures which is causing unnecessary panic,” said the municipality.

The city urged residents to adhere to the following safety measures:

– Do not attempt to cross flowing water sources.

– Do not drive across flooded rivers.

– Avoid low-lying areas that are prone to flooding.

– Evacuate flooded areas immediately.

– Pay close attention to media notices.

When reporting emergencies, the public is urged to provide precise location details to ensure that they can be reached as soon as possible. Metro Police and Disaster Emergency services can be contacted on 031 361 000.
