WATCH: Durban family shares the buzz on World Bee Day

EVERY year, on May 20, the world celebrates World Bee Day.

The purpose of the day is to raise awareness of the importance of bees and acknowledge their role in our ecosystem.

One Durban family who can attest to the importance of bees is the Birketts.

Conor Birkett and his daughters, Tess, Summer and Bo say they’ve gained a new appreciation and love for bees through beekeeping.

“I started with my first swarm about two years ago. A local resident by the name of Janice van Eck taught me how to look after a beehive, and my love and knowledge just grew from there. As a family, we are passionate about education and especially spreading awareness of the significance of bees. I think when you start to interact with them, you really gain a new sense of appreciation.

“I don’t think the general public gives it too much thought, but bees are doing a vital job in our ecosystem. Bees are the most important group of pollinators, and so many crops are dependent on bee pollination. They are vital for our ecological balance and biodiversity,” he said.
