New Germany residents unite to fight against crime

The residents said they were fed up of the criminals who roam freely on their streets.

TO address crime and other challenges that impact New Germany, the Berkshire/Lyndhurst community hosted a fun day on Freedom Day to get to know one another and show a united front.

Resident, Vuli Nxumalo said their area is plagued with crime ranging from theft to hijackings on daily basis.

“Just last week, a resident was shot to death during a hijacking. There is also a problem of drug use which leads to crime,” he said.

On Monday, April 25, a security guard was shot dead in the New Germany CBD during a cash-in-transit heist.

The day started with a fun walk/run and participants received medals.

Thabisa Makhathini and Lethokuhle Masuku show off their medals after the walk.

“The walk was also held to share safety precautions. Crime is on the increase and we cannot ignore it and pretend that everything is okay.

“The criminals steal battery gates in broad daylight and sometimes get access to our houses through the roof and today we say enough is enough, we cannot live our lives looking over our shoulders,” he said.

“We are stronger together,” added Nxumalo.

Despite all the challenges they are faced with, the residents collected clothes and food which were handed over to Ward 21 councillor, Neli Nyanisa to be distributed to flood victims.

Nyanisa said she was grateful to see the community showing a united front to fight crime and assist one another.

“Everyone has been faced with challenges these past two years, first it was the Covid-19 pandemic then looting and now the floods.

“There are many people in need of clothing and food following the floods. I wish to thank this community for their selfless acts when they are facing challenges themselves, especially crime,” she said.
