Love of travel, faith help Lombards to set the gold marriage standard

The loving couple said that they have had a fruitful marriage and were blessed with two children, a daughter who lives in Australia and a son who lives in the United Kingdom, as well as five grandchildren.

LOVEBIRDS Cheryl and Barry Lombard from Kloof celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary last week Friday.

The couple met in 1970 at a Christmas party organised by the Young Rhodesians Association, through mutual friends and just two years later at the age of 27, decided to tie the knot on April 22.

1972 at the Highlands Presbyterian Church in Salisbury, Rhodesia (as Harare in Zimbabwe was known at the time) in front of their closest friends and family.

The Lombards shared that they thoroughly enjoy each other’s company and spend most of their time together.

“We have a radio programme we do together on Good News Community Radio. We love travelling together, especially to our family in Australia and UK,” said Cheryl happily.

”The secret to maintaining a long-lasting and happy marriage is to communicate openly, spend time and do activities together, being open and tolerant with one another and having an intimate relationship with the Lord Jesus.”

Their advice to the younger generation who are ready to tie the knot is to “communicate openly, spend time together and always share their thoughts and emotions”.

”Our companionship and mutual love, no matter what the circumstances, is what we love most about each other,” said the lovebirds in unison.

When asked what the one thing they find attractive about their significant other, a content Barry said, ”It has to be her wonderful, kind and loving personality as Cheryl is known to always put others before herself.” Similarly, Cheryl said, ”Barry always makes me laugh, is kind, thoughtful and cares for me after all these years.”

The happy pair said they hoped to inspire others to keep their marriages strong, even during tough times.
