Heavy rainfall worsens Westville groundwater issue

A resident decided to draw attention to the unrepaired leak on Link Road.

WITH the pouring rain, Westville residents are concerned about the huge pothole, outside the Westville Country Club and Varsity College.

Residents fear that this pothole will cause a major accident especially during the heavy rains as groundwater rises to the surface.

On the weekend, a resident decided to draw eThekwini Municipality’s attention as nothing has been done to fix this major problem.

In a post which was shared on Facebook by Lynley Clarke, the resident can be seen with his camp chair, cooler box and his fishing rod sitting next to the hole.

Liesel Muhl from Keep Westville Beautiful said there is groundwater coming up under Link Road and the municipality keep fixing the pothole which does not help.

“The water needs to be diverted so that it does not keep breaking the tar,” she said.

Westville Country Club manager, Lisa Nourse said this has been an issue for a while, “They keep filling the hole but every time it rains, it comes up again, with this rainy weather, the hole is getting worse and it overflowing.

“The issue now is that half of the road is cordoned off and it an accident waiting to happen,” said a concerned Nourse.

PR councillor, Sanelisiwe Chabure she was told by the water department that the work was done and closed off.

“Apparently, this is an issue that has been problematic for years. The municipality needs to tackle the actual issue and it is clear that they are not doing what they are supposed to do to fix this. At one stage I was told they need to put sand soil and the next I received a response saying there was no budget,” said Chabure.
