House break-ins on the rise, say Hillcrest SAPS

The Hillcrest Police urges the community to take extra caution and ensure that equipment and valuables are not visible in yards.

CAPTIAN Linzi Smith of Hillcrest SAPS, said the department is pleading with the public to become more vigilant of their surroundings as home invasions and robberies are increasing.

“We are pleading with the community to be more vigilant in ensuring that all equipment is put away and valuables are not visible in yards,” Smith said.

Smith advised the public to keep security gates shut, if their doors are left opened.

“Our thefts are also on the rise as objects are left in plain sight, which acts as a catalyst for culprits to gain access to residences and steal items. It is easy to gain access if doors and security gates are left unlocked.”

According to Smith, residents should keep the property’s entrance free of bushes to allow for better visibility as well as reminded community members to accurately number their properties.

“Our vehicles sometimes find it difficult to find a specific house when attending to complaints as the houses aren’t clearly numbered or marked.”
