Shop steward shot during a Pinetown NUMSA march

Emmanuel Mnyandu was rushed to hospital.

A STRIKE in Hagart Road, Pinetown turned ugly when a private security company personnel arrived and shot a shop steward.

The workers at Jasco Electrical Manufacturers who have been on strike for four weeks refused to return to work until their demands are met.

Emmanuel Mnyandu was addressing a Highway Mail reporter a few seconds before he was shot with a rubber bullet in the chest.

The two security guards arrived in a white bakkie with no number plates. They stood a few metres away from the small crowd of striking workers who belong to trade union, The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA) and threw tear gas at them.

They then fired a shot and the bullet hit Mnyandu. Before he was shot, he told the Highway Mail that among their grievances was an increase of 6%.

“Recently they decided to pay us on a fortnight instead of weekly without consulting us and we demand our bonus for December,” he said.

“We were not fighting with anyone, how can they just come here and shoot at us, the worst part Mnyandu just addressed the media when it happened,” said the shock workers.

Mnyandu was rushed to hospital by some of the workers as he was losing a lot of blood.

Sanelisiwe Tsinde

My name is Sanelisiwe Tsinde, and I'm a mother of two boys and very family-oriented. Being a community journalist for years, I can proudly say I love writing about positive community news articles and giving a voice to the voiceless. Seeing people getting assistance warms my heart. Every day is a different challenge and a new learning opportunity. I supply news for our trusted publication weekly, and a few years ago, Caxton ventured into online publication, so I contribute daily to the websites. I could say I am a multimedia journalist, and working in a community newspaper is beneficial as we do not focus on one thing but we do a bit of everything.
