Garden refuse piles up at Clermont landfill site

Residents have pleaded with Durban Solid Waste to clear the mounds of refuse at the Clermont Garden Refuse and Transfer Station.

THE garden refuse piling up at the Durban Solid Waste (DSW) Clermont Garden Refuse and Transfer Station premises is getting worse by the day.

Residents who frequently use the site in Freese Road, to drop off garden refuse said the place has become a mess and an eyesore.

New Germany resident, Matthews Buthelezi said he was shocked to return to the site again this week to find it in a worse situation.

“I have been there for the past two weeks but each time I had to turn back as there are mounds of refuse. I visit the site almost every week to throw away grass, shrubs and branches. Already, there is a shortage of landfill sites and what is happening here is just sad,” he said.

Buthelezi said he fears that the case that occurred last year could repeat itself, when the road was blocked by mounds of refuse bags dumped by DSW employees.

“The smell was unbearable and what’s worse is that this road is used by motorists to get to KwaDabeka areas as there are roadworks in Dinkelman Road. If this does not get sorted soon, many people will suffer,” he said.

The concerned resident said it is rumoured this negligence is caused by the recent DSW strike.

Westville resident, Kevin Allan who also frequents the garden site said he went there on Sunday to find the site in a shocking condition.

“I often trim my garden and dump my refuse at that site and it was the first time seeing it in that condition. I do not know what happened or where the people who are supposed to be cleaning this area are,” he said.

For Allan this was shocking as he knew the site to be well-kept.

“Usually its in a good condition, they have skips there which are cleaned regularly but the amount of litter in the premises have hidden them, they are nowhere to be seen. There is even rubbish dumped on the side of the road leading to the dump,” he said.

The eThekwini Municipality was not available for comment at this time.
