The woman was rescued in Savannah Park by Kloof and Highway SPCA field officer, Philani Nzama.

THE story about the Kloof and Highway SPCA field officer who saved a woman who was being attacked by three dogs recently has received an incredible response from the public.

The SPCA put up a Facebook post last week about the field officer’s heroic act.

Philani Nzama went to collect unwanted dogs from the Savannah Park area.

On his way back to the Kloof and Highway SPCA he saw a woman being viciously attacked by three dogs while people stood and watched, no one was trying to help the lady.

He immediately stopped his vehicle and ran to assist the woman. Using his control pole to scare off the dogs he managed to free the lady who lay on the ground severely injured with the bone in her arm exposed and her open wounds were bleeding profusely.

The owner of the dogs transported the injured lady to hospital. On Monday, March 14, Barbara Patrick, manager of the Kloof and Highway SPCA; field officer, Philani Nzama and Inspector Brigitte Ferguson went to visit the woman in hospital.

“We took her everything we could to make her stay in hospital more comfortable, the staff made sure she had new pyjamas, toiletries and treats. When they arrived at the hospital , Nzama immediately recognised his new friend in the ward and learned her name was Ntombizonke and her daughter Soneni was also visiting,” said Patrick.

During the visit, the SPCA learnt that the victim’s daughter had been searching for her and had only found her mother in hospital this past Wednesday, 9 March, a week after her attack.

“Ntombizonke cried as she thanked Nzama for saving her life. The injured lady has had surgery on her arm and will need another surgery with a skin graft but we are happy she is receiving the best care in hospital and she will be opening a case with SAPS once she is a bit stronger,” said Patrick.

Results from the state vet revealed that one of the dogs had tested positive for rabies. Anyone would like to assist Ntombizonke or would like more information can email Barbara Patrick at management@kloofspca.co.za.

Vaccinate your pets against rabies

Patrick urged the public to make sure their pets are vaccinated against rabies as well as exercise caution when approaching stray animals.

“If you find a stray animal you are not familiar with only approach if it is safe to do so and absolutely necessary. In the event of being bitten or scratched immediately wash the area very well and flush under running water and immediately seek medical attention.

“If you are bitten or scratched by and animal with no proof of vaccination you will be required to go for a costly course of rabies vaccinations treatment. Rabies is fatal and the threat of it should not be taken lightly. We strongly advise against keeping any stray animals with the rising threat of rabies,” she said.
