THE Hillcrest Super Troupers classes are not only for exercising but also serves as a social club as the members have formed a special bond.
Founded 14 years ago by Ann Maud, the class grows from strength to strength.
The Super Troupers are registered with SA Senior Fitness Association (SASFA), an organisation which brings an experience of wellbeing and friendship to every South African senior, by presenting exercise and recreational programs in a relaxed environment.
Instructor, Patricia Victor (82) said she joined SASFA in 2012, having been introduced to the classes by Maud.

“I enjoyed the first class so much and since that day, I never looked back. It was so much fun, relaxing and good for the body,” she beamed.
In June 2013, the committed Victor trained for the instructors exam and she has been leading classes ever since.
The group trains on Mondays and Fridays and Holy Trinity Anglican Church Hall in Nqutu Road, Hillcrest. They have much variety in the classes with rah rah sticks, ferra bands, twizzle sticks, balls and weights which make them even more fun.

“During the classes we exercise or dance to lively old time favourites from the 60s, 70s and 80s. We have become good friends and every Friday after class those who have the time meet for coffee at our favourite local coffee shop. We also organise social events for the ladies such as lunches for birthdays, Spring Day, Easter, and Christmas and more. We have competitions such as hats for spring day and the Durban July,” said the instructor.
She said classes are open to everyone over the age of 50. “The members are able to release tensions, stresses and anxieties that may be troubling them. Physical exercise plays an important part in maintaining the health of the body. Just as important as social wellbeing,” said Victor.
Another member, Olga Russell (77) said SASFA Super Troupers is her physical, mental and emotional support group.
“Physical, for fitness exercises specifically designed for seniors without getting injured. Mental for enhancing memory; and emotional support for fun and laughter in a non-judgmental and sociable environment. I feel energized, alert and stronger after exercise,” she said.
