Bellair detective lauded for sterling work

Through the detective's  tireless work, Stephen Clifford van Eeden was sentenced to 30 years imprisonment for the brutal murder of his sister and nephew.

BELLAIR SAPS Detective Constable Amos Bhengu was recently awarded a certificate of appreciation for his sterling investigations that secured the arrest of a murder suspect.

Through his tireless work, Stephen Clifford van Eeden, 59, was sentenced to 30 years imprisonment at the Durban Magistrates Court after confessing to the brutal murder of his sister and nephew.

The murder occurred in Seaview in August last year.

“It is alleged that on the afternoon of Friday, August 6 2021, a dispute between siblings resulted in the killing of Van Eeden’s 45-year-old sister and her 13-year-old child. Both victims sustained stab wounds to the body. The accused was arrested at the scene immediately after being pointed out by the witness,” said communications officer of Bellair SAPS, Sergeant Pam Pillay.

She said the sentencing was welcomed especially since the murders occurred during the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children campaign.

“Securing the sentencing of the accused is also recognised as a fight in reducing crimes against vulnerable groups.

“Domestic violence does not necessarily only involve an intimate relationship but also includes any form of abuse experienced by a relative. There may be an ongoing pattern of coercive control and these increases in severity over time if not addressed.

“If one is being physically, emotionally, psychologically or sexually abused, it is important to seek help from your local police station or social worker,” added Sergeant Pillay.

Bhengu was delighted the accused had been placed behind bars. Branch Commander Detective Paul De Waal who shared similar sentiments said that the scene was swiftly and thoroughly processed.

“Investigation commenced immediately by the tenacious investigating officer who was integral in this successful conviction,” he added.

Station Commander, Lieutenant Colonel Radash Ramchunder also expressed his appreciation to the detective for his outstanding investigations.

“The member is commended for his commitment and dedication in serving the community of Bellair,” he added.
